Treating Severe RSV in the Hospital

The hospitalized RSV patient may receive one or more of the following treatments:

  • Pulse oximetry to measure oxygen saturation of arterial blood: If more than 95%, keep in room air; if less than 95%, administer humidified oxygen via mask, tent or nasal tubing to maintain oxygen saturations at or greater than 95%
  • Intravenous fluids to combat dehydration
  • Vigorous suctioning of nasal secretions
  • Therapy with Virazole® (ribavirin for inhalation solution, USP) is indicated for patients at risk for severe complications or those who are seriously ill with RSV infection.
  • Mechanical ventilation for children with impending respiratory failure

Antiviral treatment with Virazole is the only approved antiviral prescription therapy for RSV. The other treatment techniques help manage symptoms of RSV, easing the breathing process for patients and ensuring that they are hydrated.
